Suspension wear is gradual, which is why so many people are surprised by how different their car feels afterwards. Struts do not fail suddenly — they fade over 60,000 or 80,000 miles, and you adapt without noticing.
It is not only a comfort issue. Worn dampers let the tire lose contact with the road over bumps, which lengthens stopping distances. Worn ball joints and tie rod ends change the geometry under load and chew through tires.
On Long Island roads, bushings and struts take a beating. We inspect the whole assembly rather than replacing the one part that is obviously bad, because worn components rarely wear alone.
Signs to watch for
- Clunking or knocking over bumps and expansion joints
- The car keeps bouncing after a dip instead of settling in one motion
- Nose dive under braking or excessive lean in corners
- Cupped or scalloped tire wear
- Steering that feels loose, or a shimmy at certain speeds
When to have it done
- Inspected around 50,000 miles and at every alignment
- Struts and shocks typically 60,000 to 100,000 miles
- Immediately if you hear clunking or the car feels unstable
- After any significant pothole or kerb impact
