Exhaust & Catalytic Systems
Exhaust repair, catalytic converters, sensors and emissions faults.
Salt air and Long Island winters are hard on exhaust systems. Most of what we replace has rusted through at a joint or a flex pipe rather than failed mechanically.
Catalytic converters deserve care before replacing. A catalyst efficiency code is often blamed on the converter when the actual cause is an exhaust leak upstream, a lazy oxygen sensor, or an engine running rich and poisoning the catalyst. Replacing a converter without fixing the cause destroys the new one too.
An exhaust leak is also a safety issue, not just a noise issue, because it can put carbon monoxide where you do not want it.
Signs to watch for
- A deeper or louder note, or a rasp that appears under acceleration
- A rattle underneath that sounds like loose metal
- Rotten egg smell, or exhaust fumes noticeable in the cabin
- Check engine light with a catalyst efficiency code
- A noticeable loss of power at higher speeds
When to have it done
- As soon as the exhaust note changes
- Before a state inspection — leaks and catalyst codes both fail
- Any time you smell exhaust inside the car, without delay
What K&K does
- Locate leaks properly rather than replacing whole sections unnecessarily
- Diagnose the cause of catalyst codes before replacing the converter
- Oxygen and air-fuel ratio sensor testing and replacement
- Pipe, muffler, flex pipe and hanger repair
- Post-repair scan and drive cycle so monitors set before inspection
