Testing, replacement and parasitic draw diagnosis.
Batteries usually give warning before they strand you, but the warning is subtle: a slightly slower crank on a cold morning, headlights that dim at idle. Most people miss it and find out in a parking lot in January.
Testing takes a couple of minutes and tells you the state of charge and the cold cranking amps the battery can actually still deliver — a very different number from what is printed on the label after four winters.
If a battery keeps going flat and testing shows the battery itself is fine, the problem is somewhere else: a charging fault, or a circuit drawing current while the car sleeps. We track those down properly rather than selling you a second battery.
Signs to watch for
- Slow or laboured cranking, especially on cold mornings
- Headlights that dim noticeably at idle
- You have needed a jump start recently
- Battery warning light on the dashboard
- The car goes flat if it sits for a few days
When to have it done
- Tested every autumn, before the first cold snap
- Most batteries last three to five years in this climate
- Immediately after any jump start, to find out why it went flat
